The Port of Venice will host the Cold Ironing system Worldwide conference, Mr. Robert Ashdown, European Cruise Council  Technical & Environment Director,  announced in the booth of Venezia Terminal Passeggeri at Seatrade Cruise Shipping in Miami, the most important Worldwide event of cruising.

“The Cold Ironing is a system of electricity supplying to the docked ships”, explained Mr. Roberto Perocchio, Managing Director of Venezia Terminal Passeggeri, “which allows to switch off the auxiliary engines of the docked ships, removing emissions”. Thanks to a partnership signed in February 2010 between the Port Authority and Enel, a system allowing to power 4 ships at the same time will be created in the Port of  Venice.

This initiative perfectly fits in the strategy undertaken long since to make the maritime traffic more and more compatible with the natural and historical delicate environment of the Lagoon.
“A strategy of Green Port which is essential” said Mr. Perocchio, “in particular in view of the constant increasing, confirmed by several meetings we had in Miami, of the cruise traffic that will involve the Marittima terminals even in the next season”.

During 2013 in fact, in addition to the 2012 program, it is expected an even more relevant presence of cruise companies such as for example the doubling of Aida Cruises’ ships, an increase of 40% of Carnival or a growth of 25% of MSC.

“We are also glad to announce”, finally added Mr. Perocchio  “that in 2013 the Port of Venice will host for the first time the ship Disney Magic, according to a diversification of the offer we are following long since”.

The positive trend regarding cruises in the Venetian Lagoon continues, confirming the leadership role Venice plays in the cruise segment. The negative situation of the global economy has not affected this trend, and according to Venezia Terminal Passeggeri – the company that since 1997 has been developing and promoting passenger activity in the Port of Venice – the excellent performance of last year is expected to be replicated in 2012, with 1,800,000 cruise passengers coming ashore in Venice, which is one of the world’s top cruise hubs: according to GP Wild it is the leading homeport in Europe and the Mediterranean, and fourth in the international cruise port ranking, with routes departing for cruises around the delightful eastern Mediterranean, touching upon Italy, Croatia, Greece and Turkey. “Despite these impressive figures, we will certainly not be resting on our laurels – emphasises Roberto Perocchio, Managing Director of Venezia Terminal Passeggeri – and in order to consolidate the leading positions we have achieved, we have drawn up a plan of investments to develop and strengthen our  terminal, which will involve both technological research and infrastructural redevelopment. The SeaTrade convention in Miami is the best showcase to illustrate to international operators the major new developments regarding the passenger port of Venice”.

Work has begun to redevelop and modernise the entrance to the Marittima area, aimed at responding to the functional and safety requirements linked to flows of tourists passing through the port. In addition to this, a further stage is being completed in the programme to develop and extend the terminal, with the construction of the new parking area no. 5, equipped with 450 car spaces, bringing the total number in the area to 2080. The new parking area is located next to the People Mover, the raised monorail that in just 3 minutes takes travellers from the Passenger Port to the historic centre of Venice (car terminal of Piazzale Roma and Railway station), offering an efficient response to local mobility demands and catering to the needs of international visitors. This will give added value to a terminal that is among the most accessible on the international scene, thanks also to its close proximity to Marco Polo international airport, less than 10 km away.

New developments are also under way in terms of infrastructures. In detail, following the opening of the Isonzo 2 Terminal, built in just 18 months, a tender contract of € 9 million has been awarded for the renovation of building 109/110, to be used for cruise purposes. The building, constructed in 1931 as a cotton warehouse and until now used only for storage, occupies a surface area of 14,000 m2, and is 12 metres high.

Once the renovation work is complete, it will provide a further independent passenger station on the Tagliamento quay, allowing for a smoother service when two ships are berthed at the same time, opposite Terminal 107/108 and the renovated Terminal 109/110 respectively. In addition, the end of the year will see the completion of the renovation work on the ground floor of building 117, which will bring the total surface area to 5220 m2. Another innovation is the plan for bags to be sent for collection, by 2013, to each separate terminal, instead of to the central tensile structure as at present, in order to rationalise and speed up passenger traffic flows.

As regards technology, the end of 2011 saw the set-up of VTP Engineering Srl, a subsidiary of Venezia Terminal Passeggeri created with the aim of providing specialised technical consulting services for the planning, design and construction of infrastructures and equipment for cruise port logistics all over the world. One of the projects that has already been successfully developed and implemented in Venice, in the field of security and safety, is the revolutionary multi-function MBT, the mobile tower for embarking and disembarking passengers. This innovative solution makes it possible to manage passenger flows more effectively, cut the amount of time ships spend in the port and reduce the amount of energy consumed for port activities. The MBT lifts link the quay, the terminal and the ship, whatever the height of the boarding bridge, allowing for a number of alternative routes for passengers and quay operators/crew. VTP Engineering is also working on a project for cold ironing in Venice, which was selected as one of the finest European proposals in the energy sector and presented in Potsdam in May last year.

Also on the way are two innovative walkways, also by VTP Engineering: the first will be put in place in spring and will serve the Isonzo 1 Terminal, while the second will become operative in winter and will serve Terminal 109/110. The new mobile SBB (Ship Boarding Bridge) will allow passengers to board and disembark from cruise ships using two covered longitudinal bridges that can be tilted to bridge the gap between the departure floor of the terminal – generally higher up than the quay – and the boarding bridge of the ship. The compact size on the side facing out to sea will allow for connection with new-generation ships equipped with tenders outside the broadside, leaving the quay free for logistics operations.

In the last few years, the know-how and experience VTP has gained in the Lagoon – which have brought the Venetian company up among the world leaders in the segment – have gone into the management of two ports of strategic importance for the Mediterranean System.

Since 2010 VTP has held an equity investment in Ravenna Terminal Passeggeri Srl, the company that manages the Cruise Terminal of Ravenna. Following an initial experimental phase, with the opening of a terminal surface of 2000 m2, last year the Porto Corsini terminal registered a total of 156,000 passengers,  48,000 of them – almost 30% – homeport passengers. This result was achieved thanks to the efficient collaboration with the Guglielmo Marconi international airport of Bologna.

Also positive was the first season of Catania Cruise Terminal Srl, a subsidiary of VTP. A new facility for operators here in 2012 is the Vecchia Dogana, a structure used for welcoming departing cruise passengers and carrying out homeport operations. This extremely attractive harbour station has been constructed in a striking late-nineteenth century historical building, and boasts a futuristic design inside which is a shopping gallery where visitors can find a selection of the region’s finest wines and food products.

The Cruise Port of Venice is also well ahead of the field in terms of eco-friendly policies, and it is no coincidence that its congress facilities have been chosen to host, on 26 April 2012, the World Conference on Cold Ironing, organised by the European Cruise Council, where top experts in the sector will be examining the state of the art in terms of energy practices for the electrification of the quays.

Remaining on this subject, VTP continues to work on cutting environmental impact in the Marittima area: a fleet of electric shuttles will shortly be operative for transporting passengers to and from the parking areas and the berths.

Terminal Isonzo 2: Inaugurated today, Wednesday July 13th 2011, the new cruise facility of The Venice Passenger Port


Terminal Isonzo 2 has been carried out in 18 months with an overall investment of 12million, running at top speed the new facility will handle 600.000
passengers per year.

Terminal Isonzo 2, the new cruise facility of the Passenger Port of Venice has been opened today. Carried out in 18 months and with an overall investment of 12 million of euro (7 m. of euro by the Venice Port Authority and 5 m. of euro by Venezia Terminal Passeggeri), running at top speed it will guarantee the handling of 600.000 passengers per year.
Located in the Marittima Area in the homonymous quay, the terminal overlooks the lagoon and is conceived according to the maximum rationalization standards and extreme attention to the security of passengers in addition to the use of technologies and materials reducing environmental impact. The overall design has been conceived to guarantee an embarkation and disembarkation from cruise ships and an easy transfer of the passengers on buses.
With this new terminal inaugurated today, the infrastructural development of the Passenger Port will increase our passenger capacity, allowing us to better welcome the 1.806.000 passengers expected by the end of 2011 (11,69% increase compared to 2010”, emphasises a satisfied Sandro Trevisanato, Chairman of Venezia Terminal Passeggeri, “It is clear that we are acting in the right direction and this result bear out the merit of the choices we have made and the programme of investments we have carried out for the redevelopment of the Marittima area, in order to meet the needs of both operators and users. Venice has now become a major cruise hub. It is the departure point for itineraries that cover the most attractive area in the Mediterranean, which run through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Greece and Turkey. Its success is attributable to a number of factors, including winning over and retaining leading players in the sector and having wiretapped the new market trends, such as the winter cruising success (60.000 passengers in the period November 2010 / March 2011) which allow to visit the Mediterranean during the low season, appreciating at best its several historical and artistic treasures.  It is also worth mentioning the short cruise phenomenon, a growing new trend aimed at those trying out this holiday formula for the first time, and the excellent results achieved by the segment dedicated to incentive and business cruises”.
The terminal is divided into two parts: the Arrival area measuring 7.485 sqm and the Departure area measuring 7.130 sqm with a panoramic terrace at the first floor measuring 2.150 sqm. The Departure Area is provided with a duty free, a café and a VIP lounge. The embarkment of passengers is made smooth and secure thanks to a mobile boarding bridge dividing the passenger flow from the baggage handling and the ship provisions.

Waiting long for the transfer to the airport? A new ‘Comfort Lounge’ opens at the Venice Cruise Terminal

As from July 2nd  a new “Comfort Lounge” will be available at the Venice Cruise Terminal for passengers waiting for the transfer to the Airport. Located at the first floor of Terminal 103 the lounge is open from 8:00 a.m. to  5:00 p.m. during the peak days of July, August, September and October.

To entertain passengers while waiting, the “Comfort Lounge” will be fitted with catering service (bar food and beverages), air conditioning, comfortable seats, shatzu massaging armchairs, monitors (broadcasting news, touristic information, and information on flight departures) a reading room with international press, free internet points and a printer for web check-in, a free wi-fi area, hostesses offering general assistance and information. A special room for kids will be fitted with a colorful children playground suitable from toddlers to pre-teens, with games, table and seats, blackboards and pencils. The admittance ticket is  € 6 including a free soft drink. Accompanied children under the age of 12 shall have free access.

“By this initiative, we would like to contribute to meeting the passengers’ requirements after disembarking and in particular we want to make sure that kids always have a good time even after the end of their holiday,  while waiting to back home”, said Roberto Perocchio, Managing Director of Venezia Terminal Passeggeri SpA.

Venice Capital of Cruising. The first edition of Italian Cruise Day is set to take place on 28 October 2011in the congress centre of Terminal Passeggeri di Venezia. This will be the first forum dedicated to the Italian cruise industry, and is destined to become an annual event.

Devised by Risposte Turismo and organised together with VTP Events, a company fully owned by Venezia Terminal Passeggeri, the aim of the event is to take a snapshot of the current situation of the cruise industry in Italy, of its production processes, players, dynamics and problems, as well as its prospects for the future.
During the day, which will see the participation of the leading stakeholders in the sector, the institutions and the world of research, there will be a presentation of the first edition of Italian Cruise Watch, an analytical, updated report on historical series and traffic forecasts, territorial impact and effects and dynamics within the sector.
The encounter will provide an opportunity for dialogue, close examination and business.
An event making the point about a market sector always more strategic for the National economy – underlines Roberto Perocchio, Managing Director of Venezia Terminal Passeggeri.Confiming Venice as undisputed protagonist of the cruise market, also thanks to the increase of traffic and of the accommodation capacity of its Passenger Port. Cruises in Venice, and timeless success

This year the Port of Venice has signed a 8% of increase (January-October 2009/2010 data) of cruise passengers. A success that, despite of this economic crisis period, has made the Port of Venice first Homeport of the Mediterranean with 2.068.104 global passengers.

During the ceremony, the lucky Californian cruise passenger has received from the VTP’s Chairman Mr. Sandro Trevisanato a Murano Glass-carving. “This year we have surpassed a goal that only a few years ago would seem to be unthinkable. Going beyond the threshold of two million global passengers in 2010 is the confirmation that we have worked in the right direction. The Mediterranean leadership held by the Venetian terminal is a fact and represents a relevant factor for the lagoon economy and for the entire economy of the North East of Italy as well”, said Mr. Trevisanato.
The passenger number two million is from the United States of America. Ms Bevis Metzler  from Roseville, California,  has been given a prize on November 10th 2010, by the Venice Port Authority and the Venice Terminal Passenger, the company that has been managing the Passenger Port of Venice since 1997. The American tourist was embarking for a cruise on the Eastern Mediterranean calling in Croatia, Greece and Turkey with the ship Star Princess of Princess Cruises.
